The Eparchy of Saint Josaphat in Parma was established on December 5, 1983, by Pope John Paul II to serve the growing Ukrainian Catholic faithful across a wide swath of the United States. Named for Saint Josaphat Kuntsevych, a 17th-century martyr and champion of Church unity, the Eparchy honors his legacy through faithfulness to the Byzantine Catholic tradition. This eparchy, alongside the Stamford Eparchy, includes parishes and missions in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, and South Carolina, serving a culturally diverse and geographically wide community.
Ukrainian Greek Catholic immigrants began settling in the region in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, bringing with them their deep-rooted faith and vibrant liturgical life. Over time, these communities grew, particularly within the Stamford Eparchy, and the need for a dedicated ecclesiastical structure became clear.
The Stamford Eparchy’s first bishop, Most Reverend Robert M. Moskal, was appointed in 1984 and led the community for over two decades. In 2014, Bishop Bohdan J. Danylo was consecrated and now serves as the current Eparch, guiding the faithful with a strong commitment to tradition, pastoral outreach, and spiritual renewal.
Bishop Bohdan John Danylo is the second bishop of the Eparchy of Saint Josaphat in Parma. Appointed by Pope Francis on August 7, 2014, he was consecrated and enthroned on November 4, 2014, succeeding the late Bishop Robert M. Moskal.
Born on May 22, 1971, in Giżycko, Poland, Bishop Bohdan was raised in a devout Ukrainian Catholic family. After emigrating to the United States, he entered the seminary to prepare for his priestly ministry. He completed his undergraduate studies in philosophy at The Catholic University of America and earned a Master of Divinity from Theological College in Washington, D.C.
Bishop Bohdan was ordained to the priesthood on October 1, 1996, by Bishop Basil H. Losten for the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Stamford. He later pursued graduate studies in Rome, obtaining a Licentiate in Sacred Theology (S.T.L.) from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum).
Before becoming a bishop, he served in various pastoral and academic roles, including:
- Vice-Rector and later Rector of St. Basil’s Seminary in Stamford, Connecticut,
- Director of Vocations for the Eparchy of Stamford,
- Pastor and educator, focusing on youth and vocation formation.
As Eparch, Bishop Bohdan shepherds the Ukrainian Catholic faithful across a broad region of the United States. Known for his pastoral warmth, theological clarity, and deep love for the liturgical life of the Church, he continues to lead the Eparchy of Saint Josaphat in Parma in a spirit of renewal, fidelity, and hope.
